Employee Profiles: AE.com Creative Director, Brandon A.

Brandon A., Creative Director for AE, manages all of the teams who work on creative assets for AE.com. We sat down with him to talk about his path from intern to Creative Director, what he's most excited about for Back to School and more.

Brandon A., AE.com Creative Director

What is your background?
I went to school for graphic design & communications at LaRoche, it’s a small private school in the North Hills.

How did you get your start at AE?
I knew an intern here and he got me an internship. I was hired full time right when I graduated as a graphic designer in 2004 and I’ve been here ever since. I was a graphic designer, than senior designer, then art director, then senior art director and now creative director.

Right now I manage all of the teams that own all the creative for the website for both AE and Aerie – basically, I’m hanging out, shooting a nerf gun, riding a scooter, having fun.

What are your favorite projects that you have worked on at AE?
The launch of the Times Square billboard was pretty cool. There’s so many, it’s like a blur.

The AE Billboard in Times Square

What are your favorite parts of your job?
That I can show up every day in jeans and a t-shirt and work with cool people and do what I like.

What would you tell yourself at age 18 to help get into a creative role?
I would tell him that he needs to be passionate about what he does and be honest. It needs to be a little piece of you that you can’t turn off. It’s not 9-5. Every little piece of you needs to be about design.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere.

What are you most excited for with the BTS campaign?
We did this casting page that has bios of every kid. I’m pretty pumped about that. I’m also excited about the contest letting the customers take over our brand.

Do you have any special interests or hobbies?
I like to cook. Everything is better when it is cooked on an open flame.

What are your favorite places in Pittsburgh?
PNC Park, there’s a little shaved ice shop called Yia Yia’s Ice on the North Side (you get shaved ice for a quarter), and the Strip District.

Brandon and his family at Yia Yia's

You’re a new dad. Tell us about your daughter.
She’s radical. She’s the coolest little person ever. She makes everything better. Everything that used to be a priority is not, in a good way. And she laughs when she farts.

Employee Profiles: Laurie Z., Senior PR Manager

Senior Public Relations Manager Laurie Z. works with her team to form relationships with fashion editors, celebrities, and other influencers to help build awareness for AE. We chatted with Laurie to find out more about her, her job at AE and how you can get your foot in the door in the PR industry.

Laurie Z., Senior Public Relations Manager

What was your first job in PR like?
My first job in PR was at GUESS Inc. and was an incredible learning experience. It was with a very small team so I was lucky enough to be involved with all aspects of the department. I formed many relationships with fashion and accessory editors that I still maintain today. It was definitely challenging since everything was so new to me but it was all so very exciting. I didn’t really have anyone to hold my hand and guide me through the day to day projects so I had to just jump right in and give it my all.

How did you get your start in PR at AE?
I happened to see a job opening listed online for a PR position at AE and jumped on it instantly. I had been a big fan of the brand and knew it would be the perfect fit for me. I sent my resume, interviewed with the team and the rest is history.

What tips do you have for someone who wants to break into the PR industry?

You have to enjoy a fast paced environment, be great at multi-tasking and enjoy working with people. Fashion industry relationships and connections are very important in PR, but so are relationships in the worlds of art, music, beauty and celebrity, so I would definitely recommend getting out there and networking. You never know who you might meet and where it might take you, so don’t be shy. Internships are a great way to break into the field; they really help you get an idea for the business and the strategies behind the day to day decisions. I would also recommend looking for a position within a company that you truly believe in and are excited about. Passion and enthusiasm go a very long way.

What are your favorite things about working in PR?
I love working with the editors and forming new relationships, I love seeing the results of my work appear on the pages of magazines (it’s very rewarding) and I love working with everyone on the AE PR team!

Gwyneth Paltrow wearing AE Jeans in Vogue, August 2010

What has been your favorite part of the Live Your Life campaign?
I truly enjoyed one of the most recent stages of the campaign which was sending out the national press release and officially announcing the campaign and contest to the world. It was so exciting to be able to finally announce what we have all been working so hard to accomplish. It was such a huge team effort, everyone from all departments rallied together to make so many components align and it was just a great feeling to be able to share it with the public.

Have you traveled anywhere cool with your job?
I would have to say the most interesting place I traveled to for AE was Cancun, Mexico for Spring Break. I thought my spring break days were over after college until I had to bring the AE experience to the beaches of Mexico. It was quite an interesting experience, I must say.

What is a typical day like for you?
I’m not sure I can say that I have a typical day because when it comes to the press, anything can happen. You just never know when the next fashion emergency might happen! However, the fundamentals of my job that take place pretty much every day involve corresponding with editors and press, pitching trend pieces for upcoming fashion features and stories, holding market appointments in our PR showroom, analyzing coverage/clips, brainstorming events and partnerships and developing strategies for new ways to generate brand exposure.

How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my style as boy meets girl or tomboy chic. I enjoy wearing feminine girly girl styles and mixing it up by adding some rugged elements. I love dainty details but I’m a tomboy at heart.

Laurie and her sister, blogger NYCPretty.

What is your favorite fit of AE jeans?
I live in AE denim! I have two favorite AE denim fits: Boyfit and Skinny. I wear them all the time. In the summer I sport my AE Shorties.

Do you have any fun interests or hobbies?
Running! After work and on the weekends you can usually catch me running in Central Park. My favorite spot is at the Reservoir. On a clear, crisp evening with the NYC skyline in the background and the sun setting – it’s the perfect place to be! I also love traveling with my husband. I’m a beach lover so my favorite destinations are usually tropical of some sort. Some of my recent trips include Costa Rica and Jamaica, but the place I love visiting most, and have a slight obsession with is Hawaii. I think I might have been Hawaiian in my past life.

Laurie in Hawaii

Do you have any cool summer plans?
Sun and Fun in Jamaica and Montauk!

Addie P., Lead Receptionist

How did you get your start at AE?
I started at the front desk. When I came here I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so working at the front desk is a great way to get your foot in the door. From there, I’ve acted in AEO TV episodes, worked in recruiting, and there are lots of projects here and there that I do, so it’s really fun.

What does your job entail?

I am one of the on-boarding partners during every new employees first 90 days. I take them to new hire events and tours. I do a lot with associate recognition as well – High Five Awards, Eagles Elite and service awards. I manage the AE Recruiting Facebook page as well.

The AE Recruiting Facebook Page Addie manages

If you weren’t working at AE, what would you want to be doing?
I would want to be a professional wander luster – I want to travel around the world! Or I’d want to be singing in a band or own my own candy store.

Where are your favorite places to travel?
I’m going to Cape Cod on Wednesday and that’s my absolute favorite place. We have a house in Chatham. I love the Bahamas, too. We used to go to a ranch in Montana called the Bolder River Ranch which was amazing, too.

Vintage prep with a bohemian twist.

Employee Profiles: Stephanie O., Senior International Marketing Coordinator

American Eagle currently has stores in 12 countries and will be in 13 countries by the end of 2012. None of this would be possible without the hard work of Senior International Marketing Coordinator Stephanie O. and her team.

Stephanie O., Senior International Marketing Coordinator

How did you get your start at AE?
I actually started out at AE as an executive assistant in IT in 2007. My boss knew marketing was my background and passion and where I wanted to go. Everyone was very supportive to help me on that path. I worked in PR at AE prior to being in the marketing department as well and worked with the SVP of International at that time on press releases announcing our global expansion, which got me interested in the international part of the business.

What is the most fun part of your job?
Learning all the different cultural and consumer behaviors of different markets and being able to work with people from all over the world. The other day we were on a conference call here in Pittsburgh with our team in NY, and partners in Poland and the Middle East.

What is a typical day like for you?
It usually starts pretty early with conference calls. We have a weekly call with each of our international partners in all of our markets. The calls are early in the morning to accommodate the time difference.  Prior to the calls, I review all of the emails that came in through the night since most of our partners have completed a full day of work, or close to it, by the time I come start in the morning.

What tips do you have for someone who wants to be in international marketing?

Having a passion for where you work and an acute attention to detail are important.  Equally key is the desire to learn about other areas of the world and the ability to think outside of the domestic retail business.

Do you have any special interest or hobbies?
Definitely travel.  I love to travel whenever I get the chance. I like doing different home decorating things that I find on Pinterest. I also like to cook a lot.

Stephanie's wedding Pinterest board for her upcoming wedding.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Like most, I’m a huge Pinterest fan. I’m getting married in August, so I’m always on there looking for wedding ideas and often find myself with new recipes, style inspiration and home decor. There’s a lot of really great stuff on there. I would say I’m addicted!

If you weren’t working at AE, what would you want to be doing?
I would want to still do something in marketing, particularly brand management or consumer behavior. I love putting all the pieces together and working to build a brand identity. I received my undergraduate degree & MBA in Brand Management.  I also find it very interesting how people react to marketing and why they do or don’t want to purchase a product based off how something is marketed.

What are you most excited about for the future of AE internationally?
Bringing the brand to new markets and having them learn about what we have to offer in terms of denim, lifestyle, a great assortment of product and seeing that growth and being a part of it.

Where are your favorite travel destinations – domestically or internationally?
One of my favorite cities is Prague. I love that it is so old world and that it looks like it is completely from a fairy tale. Personally, I’m hoping we open stores there at some point! I also love anywhere in the Caribbean or by the beach!

AE Employee Profiles: Rachel T., Graphics Buyer

Your favorite styles at AE stores and on AE.com don't just appear - AE employees like Rachel T., Assistant Buyer of Women's Graphics and Swimwear, and her team research the hottest trends to bring the latest styles to you.

Rachel T., Assistant Buyer of Women's Graphics and Swimwear

How did you get your start at AE?
Being from Pittsburgh, I always knew AE was an awesome company to work for.  I landed an internship here in college and fell in love with the idea of buying. I had no idea I could have such a creative and colorful job in the corporate business world.

What is the most fun part of your job?
I love getting to work with so many different people every day. There is never a day that I just sit and stare at my computer. On any given day, I’m on the phone with people in New York at our design office or e-mailing someone in China. I get to work with such a diverse group of people.

How do you choose which graphic styles to buy?
I just try to get inside the customer’s head - I imagine I’m her. Then we pull these trends from fashion inspiration and translate them for our customer.  Some examples are neon and ethnic/tribal prints. The goal is to always keep it fresh and exciting each season!

The AE Vintage Crop Tank is one of our favorite graphic pieces from Summer!

What are you most excited about for the Back to School season?
I was so excited when I saw the new marketing campaign. I love that we are following real people who have interesting and diverse lives.  I love that accessible, relatable feeling as a direction for our brand. It feels authentic.

How would you describe your personal style?
I try to stick to the basics then “funkify” them by incorporating vintage pieces or updated trendy accents. Since we’re in the heart of the summer concert season, I’m going through a hippie phase! I’m loving everything that feels like ‘70s Woodstock!

What tips do you have for someone who wants to be a buyer?
I would tell them to make sure they love both sides of buying – trend shopping and the business/numbers aspect.  It’s definitely a balance of both skills.  I’d also tell them that not many jobs allow you to use both halves of your brain at the same time! It’s an awesome industry that will teach you A LOT right out of college.

Where do you find your inspiration?
A few different places - I get a lot of trend ideas from celebs and gossip mags, but I’m also lucky enough to work in a super trendy office. I look to my coworkers to see how they interpret trends to suit their own personal style.  I’m also always thinking about how people styled clothes over the past few decades – they have a lot of the answers if you just go back in time and find them.

What are your favorite fashion blogs?
The Sartorialist is my favorite because it features real people all over the world. I also love Atlantic-Pacific and Sincerely Jules.

Do you have any special interest or hobbies?
I love to travel – this year was France, next year is Bolivia. I try to pick a new country every year. Aside from travel, I love antiquing. That’s where my vintage love comes from. I love finding cool antiques to decorate my apartment or my wardrobe!

Rachel snapped this photo on a trip to Tanzania.

If you weren’t working at AE, what would you want to be doing?
I would have my own boutique in some adorable beach town. Oh – and I’d be a yoga instructor on the side! Sounds tempting…

Employee Profiles: Dan F., AE Copywriter

Dan F., Copywriter for AE, works with the marketing team each season to create cool, original writing for the brand. He writes the taglines, headlines & other “copy” you see in stores, emails, AE.com & more to give the brand a fun, distinctive voice. We sat down with Dan to learn a little more about what it’s like to be the voice of AE!

Dan F., AE Copywriter

How did you get your start at AE?
I jumped around a lot before I came here. I worked in a lot of journalism-based jobs, a lot of PR. I was looking for something new and heard about an open freelance copywriting position here. It was something I had never really done before and I thought it would be a good challenge for me so I gave it a shot and now I’m here full time.

The view from Dan's desk.

What is your background in writing? Did you always know you wanted to write?
I was a huge film nerd growing up. I went to school for film making for the first two years. Halfway through I started getting into journalism and creative non-fiction writing and ended up majoring in journalism while still studying film. I always liked telling stories and finding different ways of doing it, whether it was writing, film making, whatever. It was something I always connected with and something I wanted to do. What I do now is basically help tell the story of the brand, season, and product..

What are some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
At the beginning of every season I write a long story for it. No one ever really sees it, we just pull lines and ideas from it throughout the season. That’s something I’ve always enjoyed writing – there’s a lot of freedom with it and there’s no pressure or limit to what or how much I write. That’s where taglines for the season come from a lot of the time.

Part of the Summer 2012 story

Where do you find your inspiration?
There’s not just one thing I get inspiration from. I like watching movies, reading magazines, or reading short stories and novels. Even song lyrics are cool to look at sometimes. Another cool thing is listening to the way people talk, the way they have little idiosyncrasies. I think speech patterns are interesting. The way people talk is usually a lot more interesting than the way they write.

Dan's copy from AE Holiday 2011

What is a typical day like for you?
Reading a lot of e-mails from people requesting different lines of copy while making a lot of revisions. It’s really busy work but it’s really rewarding when you see the end result that has your words and your voice in it.

If you weren’t a copywriter at AE, what would you want to be doing?
I probably would still be writing in some way. I’ve always liked traveling and I love food so maybe I’d be a food writer or restaurant reviewer or a travel writer. That’s my favorite thing to do – go to new cities and try new foods and new restaurants.

A seafood boil at Tubby's Tank House in Savannah, GA

Where are your favorite places to travel?
Anywhere on the coast is awesome because I love seafood. Anywhere you can get a good seafood boil near the beach.

Do you have any cool hobbies or interests?
I like to golf, and I run as much as I can. I like movies, reading and weird pop culture stuff. I haven’t had a lot of time for hobbies lately though because I just bought a house, so I’ve been spending all my free time learning how to take care of it.

Dan, second to left, ran the Pittsburgh Marathon on a relay team with his sister, father, godfather, and friend in May

What is some of your favorite writing?
Nonfiction: Hell’s Angels by Hunter S. Thompson
Novel: Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk
Short Story: Bicycles, Muscles, Cigarettes by Raymond Carver
TV Show: Breaking Bad by Vince Gilligan
Film: Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet

AE Employee Profiles: Paul E., Director of Marketing Strategies, Testing, & Research

New jean fits, top patterns and updated fabrics don't just end up in our stores - Paul E., Director of Marketing Strategies, Testing and Research, and his team work to find the coolest trends and clothes to stock our shelves. We interviewed Paul to learn more about him and his job at AE.

Paul E., Director of Marketing Strategies, Testing, and Research

How did you get your start at AE?
During and post-college I was working in a retail store near the AE Home Office while trying to find my ideal job. Fortunately, AE recruiters were near and brought me in for interviews. I began my career shortly after as an Assistant Buyer and eventually worked my way up becoming the Women’s Denim Buyer. My claim to fame was buying AE’s first pair of stretch denim and it was actually my first buy!  As I continued my career with the goal of diversifying myself to have a broader scope of the business, I moved into Merchandise Planning to understand the business more while rotating through Men’s, Women’s and Aerie then eventually landed where I am today which allows me to bring all my experiences together.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
Driving the business! I love to identify little nuggets within the business that have the potential to explode, then strategize on implementation and ultimately measure the success.

What are some of the cool projects you have worked on?
One of the coolest projects I do is “in-home” focus groups. With the constant effort to stay in the pulse of the customer, we visit high school and college students at their residences (dorms, apartments, or homes) where they bring their close friends to participate in a group discussion. We “raid” their closets to gain insights on what they are purchasing and why. It’s amazing to hear the dialogue they have among each other and see their excitement when talking about clothes. It’s great to observe them in their own environment where they are relaxed, comfortable and willing to share shopping experiences. The most unexpected part when I first stared doing the in-home focus groups was seeing how excited the guys were when it comes to presenting what they wear!

What is the coolest place your job has taken you?
Sticking with the above, I have visited many great locations but would have to say the most memorable after a long six week road trip of doing “in homes” across multiple markets, the final group was conducted in a beachfront home with a priceless view.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Everyday from everyone I am in touch with at all levels within the organization. You can learn from every person whether it’s an intern bringing a young fresh, new idea to the table or leadership communicating their vision. I love how accepting and encouraging it is to hear everyone’s ideas and to know it adds value that is received when an idea or opinion is given. It’s totally a collaborative team approach and it is highly motivating and competitive in a good way and ultimately a feeding frenzy of inspiration.

What is a typical day like for you?
You have your schedule for the day, anticipating, prepping as much as humanly possible and it can change or evolve very rapidly once the day begins. A typical day, to sum it up, is crazy passion and unexpected all at the same time. What’s fun about it is that there is no typical day and the days are never the same.

What is your favorite place in Pittsburgh?
My favorite places in Pittsburgh are wherever there is a good restaurant. They are spread throughout the city and have diverse offerings. Current faves: brunch must-have is Meat & Potatoes and I'm a sucker for good margaritas and tacos at Cantina.

What is your personal style?
My personal style can be summed up as scrambling to make a decision of what to wear in the twenty minutes prior to leaving for work at the beginning of the day.

If you weren’t a working at AE, what would you be doing?
I’d have my own store – doing the same thing! I love retail in general and have a passion for the business. I would incorporate all of the things I’ve learned throughout my career - a love of clothing.

Do you have any cool Summer plans?
Sun and fun in Turks and Caicos.

Employee Profiles: AE Senior Photographer Lauren L.

Do you ever wonder who takes all the amazing photos you see on AE.com? We sat down with Lauren L., AE Senior Photographer last week to find out more about her and the shots she and her team create for AE.

Lauren L., AE Senior Photographer

How did you get your start at AE?
I’m from a small town in Ohio. I got my start at AE about 3 months after I graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I started off in a freelance position, but quickly moved into a permanent position as the AE brand photographer.

How did your passion for photography begin?
My mom was actually a model in New York City in her early twenties. She showed me her print book of all the work she did in New York and Paris, and I was obsessed with the photos! I always thought it would be really great to make images like that one day.

What is the coolest place your job has taken you?
Last month I was sent to NYC to shoot at Pier 59 for our Back to School campaign. I got to work with a huge and amazing team of really talented people. We had a lot of fun and made some really cool photos.

Lauren captured this shot at Pier 59 studios last month.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find a lot of lighting inspiration in somewhat “weird” fashion editorials. I am always inspired/fascinated by clothing, traveling, and people. My biggest inspiration is meeting other photographers, or people who are very passionate or driven toward something.

What is a typical day like for you?
I don’t really think we have typical days at the studio…One day I can be shooting a model in his underwear, and the next I can be shooting a puppy in a Santa hat for a holiday gift card! That’s what I love so much about my job, it’s always evolving.

If you could photograph anyone or anything in the world, who would it be?
I think the answer to this question is always changing for me, but right now I would love to shoot Lindsey Wixson, or Vincent Gallo. I’d also love to do a shoot in Alaska or Thailand.

A few shots Lauren took during the Spring 2012 photo shoot.

What is your favorite place in Pittsburgh?
My favorite place in Pittsburgh is probably Kennywood or The Andy Warhol Museum. I bring people to both all the time.

What is your personal style?
I don’t think there is a specific way to describe my style. Around here, it’s all about comfort because I’m moving around so much. I love black and lately I’ve been mixing things like black jeans with a neon top. I’ve also been trying to wear more collared preppy pieces. It’s also safe to say I have every single AE Chambray Shirt, and then some!

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I would possibly be a Veterinarian. As funny as that sounds, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Or I would be very nomadic and not have a job and travel to other countries…meeting new people, trying new foods, and still probably taking lots of photos.

What is the one thing you wear everyday?
I wear these specific three bracelets and my watch everyday. It’s my arm party!

Lauren's arm party.

Employee Profiles: Manager of Store Experience Ellen G.

Ever wonder where AE gets the ideas for all of our cool contests and training for our associates? Ellen G., Manager of Store Experience, and her team brainstorm, create and execute training programs to keep our associates in the know of the latest trends and fashion from AE as well as recognition programs for all of the hard work they put in to helping you find the perfect outfit.

Ellen G., Manager of Store Experience

What exactly is in store experience?
Store experience is basically any of the interaction that a customer has with one of our Associates or anything an associate experiences as an employee of AEO – all of our training programs and AEO TV. AEO TV is a weekly television episode that features fashion trends; we interview designers, merchants, and other people that play a role in creating the AEO brand and product. It’s a really cool way to give our associates info. I also manage incentive programs and associate contests. We are always running some sort of associate contest. My team designs and manages all the recognition programs within stores. We have a program we call the Wall of Awesome that allows our associates to be recognized by their managers. I also manage conferences and meetings in the field. Anything the manager or associate experiences in the store, we’ve touched.

How did you get your start with in-store experience?
I was a store manager my senior year of college [at another retailer] and my regional manager knew I had an interest in working in training and moving to corporate, so they asked me to move to the home office in Chicago and I started as a training coordinator and I worked my way up. You go through executing the training to managing the whole department.

What are some of the cool projects you have worked on?
I would say the Cruise Through Holiday contest was pretty cool. We sent our top performing managers and District Managers during the holiday season on cruises.

I get to throw a party for the Field Management when we hit big milestones. When we sold a record number of jeans last fall we threw a huge celebration and it was a lot of fun recognizing the people who are out in the field making it happen.

Where is the coolest place your job has taken you?
I love going to Manhattan. It’s always my favorite place to go, no matter what. It’s just full of so much life and it’s where you see trends start. One thing I love about the Manhattan stores is that associates love fashion and they love what they do, so it is inspirational to be there. I also did a really cool conference in Miami.

What are your inspirations?
In terms of work, I get a lot of personal satisfaction. I love working. It’s really important to me that my job is 50% business and 50% creative, I love that. I love business and I love being creative. I get a lot of inspiration from my team. They’re all really vibrant and all really excited to come up with something new. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it comes to training. You always have to be updating and changing things.

If you weren’t working at AE, what would you want to be doing?
I would own a lifestyle boutique and sell rehabbed furniture, jewelry, local artists work and other bright stuff. I would just sell all the things that I love.

One of Ellen's newly rehabbed chairs.

What is your personal style?
I would say I possibly over-accessorize sometimes. My personal style is ‘more is more.’ I also appreciate fabulous fitting denim, that’s why I love American Eagle. I would say I love good staples and loud accessories. All you need is either one or two bold pieces or enough understated pieces to make a statement. I’m super into stacking bracelets, rings and wearing multiple necklaces.

What are some of your other hobbies and passions?
I make jewelry. My mom is an artist and she loved jewelry so we always made it together. I don’t sell it anymore because I don’t have time but I love to make it for my family and friends! I also love crafting (only cool stuff) and decorating my house. I also spend way too much time on my iPhone.

I  LOVE  music: I listen to house music and electronic music.  I’ve loved house music since I was in high school. A lot of my friends back home and in Chicago DJ so there’s always a show to go to. Going to see live music is one of my favorite hobbies, my friends and I plan all of our trips around that.

Ellen (far left) and her friends at a show

You aren’t a Pittsburgh native… what Pittsburgh spots do you love?
I like Verde, it has a Mexican/Pacifico flair with great fish tacos. I love Tamari, its Argentinean and Asian fusion. I love going to the Strip District (a street full of Italian markets & vendors). I’m Italian and I love a good cured meat and cheese, so my boyfriend and I go every weekend to get fresh meat and cheese. My fave fabric store, Loom, is also in the Strip District. Of all the places I’ve lived Pittsburgh definitely has the prettiest landscape and architecture.

Nature Inspires – and So Do Conservation Volunteers

This guest blog post was written by Claire W., Associate Design Director at American Eagle Outfitters. Claire participated in SCA's Alternative Spring Break this March with college students from across the country.

Claire makes the drive to Joshua Tree National Park

As I navigated the winding dirt roads of the Mojave in my totally impractical rented white sports car, my stomach was in knots.  The directions read “pass a cluster of rocks and turn right at the first unmarked gate.”  I’m used to Hopstop telling me which subway exit to take – how on earth would I find my fellow conservation volunteers in the middle of a desert?

Some quick background: I’m a CAD designer by trade, based in New York City.  I work for American Eagle Outfitters, which annually sponsors the Student Conservation Association’s Alternative Spring Break.  I am also an avid volunteer, and my company decided to recognize my community service by sending me to Joshua Tree National Park where I joined a group of college students who chose to restore a fire-damaged section of Joshua Tree National Park rather than burn themselves in the Mexican sun.

Just after dawn and a few tours of the wrong unmarked roads, I finally stumbled across base camp and quickly joined a huddle of young women and men planning the day’s activities.  Next thing I knew, we were doing yoga poses to limber up for our work day.  Doing a sun salutation was an entirely different experience at Joshua Tree.  Standing below stunning rock formations, my face was warmed by the actual sun, and although it wasn’t easy twisting into a human pretzel in long johns and jeans, it was refreshing not to be crammed into a sweaty studio with high-strung New Yorkers adjusting their yoga mats to accommodate inconsiderate latecomers.

I’d prepped for weeks with my personal trainer—flipping tractor tires, swinging sledgehammers, running with a sandbag on my shoulders – but nothing could have prepared me for carrying pick axes and a backpack loaded with water up a steep hill in eighty degree heat.  Hiking for me means ascending the subway escalators in heels, and I was too embarrassed to admit that I didn’t really know what to do.  So I swiftly donned my fresh-out-of-the-box boots (green suede, sweater-lined, very chic) and followed my crew mates up the trail.

Conquering my fear of heights and deadly weapons, I grabbed a pick and set about digging holes – not as easy as one might imagine on a steep slope where the arid soil is more like solid rock.  We’d plant baby Joshua Trees between two plastic tubes that houses gelatinous, sticky “dry water” that would feed the seedlings for up to two years.  We then encircled each plant in a chicken wire cage, or “manicure killers” as I like to call them, and numbered them for the Park Service to track in future years.

Thirty of us planted 200 trees in just two days.  We were covered in dirt and dust, and while the sun was relentless, so were our spirits.  We had been part of something really worthwhile, as in 20 years’ time the scorched terrain will look just as verdant as the surrounding hills.  I ate lunch on a huge rock instead of in front of my PC, and for the first time in my life I nibbled on trail mix in an appropriate surrounding.

In subsequent days, we removed invasive weeds from a basin (I can now pick the evil Sahara mustard plant from a police line-up) and wandered the landscape in search of desert tortoises as part of a wildlife survey. I also pulled a cactus spike from a student’s leg, watch giant-eared rabbits race every which way, and successfully avoided the wrong end of numerous scorpions.  Never again will I complain about the lack of bathrooms in New York when, for a week, it was just me and some bushes…and the occasional rattlesnake.

As my only prior knowledge of this region came from Road Runner cartoons and Saturday afternoon westerns, I was amazed by the desert’s diversity.  I had no idea so many plants could flourish in this unique ecosystem.  I was also surprised by the variety of backgrounds among the student volunteers; I expected to be the only textile designer, but sort of thought everyone else would be a geology major or environmental scientist.  In fact, most weren’t there to pursue their studies.  The majority of my new-found friends just wanted to give back.  It was inspiring to be surrounded by a group of people who, despite looming finals, had chosen a different path.  We are known as a generation of materialistic consumers, and purveyors of instant gratification, but my team’s selfless and painstaking efforts on behalf of this all-but-alien place left a deep and lasting impression.

Gazing up each night at constellations undimmed by city lights and waking up each morning with only the sunrise as my alarm clock was truly magical.  No Facebook updates boasting of my travels, no gift shops in which to consume – just sheer, hard work in the pursuit of positive change.

I am extremely grateful to my employers for allowing me the freedom and opportunity to walk the walk.  It would have been much easier for them to donate a few tee shirts or make an additional contribution. However, I would never have been exposed to the fantastic work that the National Park Service and SCA undertake every day.  I came away with a renewed commitment to get back to nature, and even though I’m back to wearing dresses and heels to work, my hiking boots are waiting by the front door, facing a special place that’s 3,000 miles away yet never far from my heart.

Employee Profiles: Web Designer Catherine G.

Always wanted to know who’s work is behind the pages of AE.com and our AE e-mails? Catherine G., one of AE's web designers, is part of the team that brings the brand to life online. We sat down with Catherine to learn a little bit more about her and her work at AE.

Catherine G., one of AE's Web Designers

What made you interested in graphic design?
I’ve always created and organized things. When I was little, I didn’t really like to go outside and play much, I would sit in our basement on our (at the time, very cool) Gateway computer and design posters with song lyrics on them for my bedroom. In college, I majored in Visual Communication at Ohio University where I primarily learned editorial design. This lead to me an internship at Cosmopolitan in New York one summer. Growing up in a suburb of Pittsburgh where AE is based, I knew working here was a feasible dream, if I could get my foot in the door and I’m so glad I did. Working here utilizes my experiences in fashion editorial design in an online medium, plus I enjoy working for a brand my friends and I grew up with and still love.

Lee's Art Shop - Catherine's favorite art store in Manhattan, near the Hearst Tower where she worked.

What are some of the projects you have worked on for AE?
At AE, my daily responsibility is designing all of the email marketing creative that we send out each week. I love designing the trend-focused emails, which really let the customer see how they can outfit themselves in up-to-date looks with our product. Recently, I’ve also worked on pages of the website as well as a new experience called “Where Has Your AE Been.” (It launches on AE.com later this month.) All these projects let me work with different groups of people within the company and keeps me on my toes.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I don’t really find inspiration from anywhere specifically, I gather it mostly from magazines and blogs. I have a floor-to-ceiling cork board in my bedroom where I put up photos that excite me in some way — like a real life Pinterest. My desk at work is the same. My bedroom has a chill gray, teal vibe to it and my desk has a bright pop of pink and orange right now to get me motivated for the day. It’s hard for me to set time aside to look for inspiration, I just like to be surrounded by things that look nice and draw from what’s around me.

If you weren’t a graphic designer, what would you be doing?
I always say if I wasn’t a graphic designer, I would be a travel agent. I get a natural high from planning trips – I love booking flights. I always want to find the best deal, flight time and perfect seat. I hate to admit this, but Kayak.com is really fun for me.

What’s your favorite part of Pittsburgh?
My favorite part of Pittsburgh is Shadyside, the neighborhood where I live. I’m within walking distance to my yoga studio, Starbucks, tons of restaurants and bars where my friends and I hang out, and a Sephora (which is big trouble for my bank account). The coolest part about it is everywhere I go, I see people I know. On Saturday morning at the yoga studio, I see 3 or 4 girlfriends that I not only work with at AE but had drinks or dinner with the night before. It’s a quiet, small town feel in an awesome city — I never run out of things to do here.

What are your other passions and hobbies?
I’m a yoga teacher at Amazing Yoga in Shadyside. I’ve been practicing there for three years and I went to Costa Rica and Mexico to get my teaching certifications this past year. I also teach yoga at our corporate gym, AE Fit.

Last August I became a Big Sister for Big Brothers, Big Sisters and have a Little Sister who is fourteen. We spend time together on weekends — painting pottery, ice skating... I recently took her to Whole Foods and she tried sushi for the first time (she liked it!). Big Brothers Big Sister is a program that AE supports heavily and I love giving back on the smaller scale, one-on-one.

Are you headed anywhere for vacation this summer?
I’m going to Lollapalooza and it’s the first musical festival I’ll have been to. I’m so excited to see Kaskade, Florence and the Machine, Washed Out, and The Weeknd.

Employee Profiles: Footwear Buyer Laura K.

Have you checked out AE.com's footwear section lately? If you haven't, you are definitely missing out. AE.com's footwear offerings have been completely overhauled in recent months by Men's & Women's Footwear and Accessories Buyer for online, Laura K. and her fabulous team. We spoke with Laura about her background at AE, her favorite shoe trends, and more.

Laura K., Men's and Women's Footwear and Accessories Buyer

How did you get your start as a buyer?
I actually started at American Eagle allocating skirts and dresses to all the stores. After a year I switched over to the AE.com team and started as an assistant buyer for Aerie. Then I moved to Women's AE and 77kids for a couple years. I most recently got moved to Men's and Women's Footwear & Accessories to start growing the online exclusive footwear assortment with AE branded footwear and really cool additional brands [Minnetonka, BC Footwear, and Timberland for example] that complement American Eagle clothes. Basically I’ve worked in every department across all brands except for Men’s apparel which I am going to have to do so I can say I've done it all! I have been at AE since I graduated college, so six years...time flies when you’re having fun!

What is a typical day for you like?
No day is like any other day. We manage all four seasons at once, so that can sometimes be tricky!  Right now it’s about to be summer and we are buying our Holiday assortment, crazy right?  I meet with my team to see how business is doing and react to sales, and I go to loads of marketing and merchandising meetings.

What is your go-to, everyday shoe?
I feel like I wear booties year round, so that is my go-to shoe. You can wear them with jeans, skirts, dresses, shorts  - you name it. When we were in New York earlier this week, so many girls walking the streets had booties on. They are the most easy to wear trend right now.

AE Western Heeled Bootie, one of Laura's top picks.

Have you always loved shoes?
I’ve always loved shoes but being in this position has made me want to buy more shoes than I ever could have imagined. I used to have just one footwear organizer in my closet and now it has tripled. When you spend all your time looking at trend in a particular category, it opens your eyes to all of the amazing style that is out there.

If you weren’t a shoe buyer, what would you be doing?
I would want to be an interior designer. My passion outside of work is making my space at home the most comfortable and inviting place for me. When you travel all the time, it’s good to have a great space to come home to.

Laura's passion - decorating her home!

Besides fashion, what are your other hobbies or interests?
Probably trying new restaurants. Pittsburgh has a top 25 restaurant list and I have a goal to hit up all those different places by the end of the year. When I travel, I always look at where the best places to go and try different restaurants. If one of my friends was visiting Pittsburgh, I would take them to Dish, Avenue B, Salt of the Earth, Girasole, Seviche, Kaya, or The Porch.

Where are you headed to for vacation this summer?
Actually, Friday (tomorrow) I am headed to Vegas for my friend’s bachelorette party. From there I am going to LA, road trippin’it up the California coast to see Big Sur. Then we will be in San Fransisco on Thursday and more of my friends are flying in from all over for another bachelorette party. After that we are going to Napa for the weekend. It’s a total girls getaway and I’m going to need to pack some 5-hour energy, Advil and some killer shoes to make for an epic trip!

Our Stuff, My Style Winners - The Girls

Our AE associates are seriously stylish and we wanted to give them the opportunity to show off their personal fashion sense. With that in mind, the Our Stuff, My Style contest was born.

Jenn H. and Rachel H., two of the winners from Our Stuff, My Style

This winter, we featured our 8 finalists. Four winners were voted on by AE employees. In February, the winners traveled to the AE Home Office in Pittsburgh for a photo shoot and to film an episode of AE TV (shown to AE store associates). This week we are featuring Jenn H. & Rachel H. Check back next Thursday for the guys!

Rachel H. from Redding, CA

Why did you decide to enter Our Stuff, My Style?
I've always wanted to be a model. It was a chance to win a modeling contest!

The lively, upbeat atmosphere. I've been working at AE since March 2011 - it's such a fun place to work. I really love the discounts and the clothes, too.

What is your dream job after AE?
I want to do something in the medical field - maybe physical therapy. But I would take being an AE model over that any day!

What are your favorite pieces from the Spring line and what is your favorite way to style them?
I love layering all the knit tops in bright colors.

What is your favorite fit of AE jeans?
Skinny jeans.

What is one thing you never leave the house without?
My cell phone and camera - I'm always taking pictures.

Jenn H. from Brighton, MI

Why did you decide to enter Our Stuff, My Style?
I was at a store meeting and the managers picked two names - one of them was mine!

What is the best part of working at AE?
The environment: the people are so friendly, it's like a family. It's just good energy. I've been working at AE since August 2011.

What is your dream job after AE?
I want to work for NASA. I'm going to college in the fall for Aerospace Engineering.

What are your favorite pieces from the Spring line and what is your favorite way to style them?
I love the neon trend. I like contrasting neons with neutral colors like grey or white.

What is your favorite fit of AE jeans?
I love the Jeggings. It's so rainy and salty because of the snow in Michigan so other jeans will drag on the ground.

What is one thing you never leave the house without?
My smile!
